Fearless armed robbers exchange gunfire with police anti-robbery squads in the Eastern Region.

Highway robbers attacked the Anti-Armed Robbery team assigned to the Eastern region by Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare on the Akyem Ettukrom to Bunso road.

Commuters were reportedly robbed by thieves with AK47s on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at dawn.

According to Starr News, when the thieves saw the police bus taking the personnel to their operational zones, they opened fire on it, prompting the police to fire back.

The gunfight lasted a few minutes, according to the story, but the bandits escaped into the jungle after some were injured.

The police searched the area, as well as surrounding dwellings and several health facilities, but were unable to locate the culprits.

On June 5, 2021, two highway robbers, Haruna Amadu, 25, and Joseph Nyira, 25, were apprehended after killing a trader in a robbery attack on the road, with their accomplices still at large.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), has deployed 126 personnel from the special Anti-Armed Robbery Squad (AARS) to the Eastern area to combat recurrent robberies.

To deal with the threat, the AARS special force will supplement the Eastern Regional Command's capacity and capabilities.
